Knowledge Architecture Terms¶
Define controlled knowledge-architecture terms used across the Value Realization Body of Knowledge, Alescent Body of Knowledge, their Frameworks, governance systems, Libraries, source-intake workflows, and derivative assets.
Controlled Terms¶
Body of Knowledge¶
Definition. The complete governed corpus for a defined discipline, institution, or domain, including knowledge objects with explicitly differentiated authority and lifecycle status.
Application. Use for the umbrella knowledge system. Do not use as a synonym for only the Framework, only the Canon, or only a reference Library.
Value Realization Body of Knowledge¶
Abbreviation. VRBoK.
Definition. The governed, portable, and generalized corpus of concepts, models, methods, Practices, Patterns, evidence, language, and guidance concerned with identifying, qualifying, quantifying, justifying, governing, verifying, realizing, validating, reporting, and sustaining value.
Relationship. Contains the Value Realization Framework as its principal organizing framework.
Alescent Body of Knowledge¶
Abbreviation. ABoK.
Definition. The governed corpus of Alescent-specific strategy, operating models, applied Practices, Products, Platforms, Patterns, Playbooks, commercial constructs, institutional knowledge, brand guidance, and derivative-asset governance through which Alescent applies and advances Value Realization.
Relationship. Contains the Alescent Strategic Framework as its principal organizing framework and is informed by the VRBoK.
Framework¶
Definition. An organized system of concepts, relationships, models, principles, rules, methods, and guidance used to understand or govern a subject within a Body of Knowledge.
Application. Use when referring to the organizing system rather than the complete knowledge corpus.
Canon¶
Definition. The body of content formally accepted as authoritative within a stated scope.
Application. Use as an authority designation. Do not use indiscriminately for the entire repository, Body of Knowledge, Library, source collection, or derivative environment.
Canonical¶
Definition. Formally accepted as controlling within a stated scope.
Permitted constructions. Canonical content, canonical definition, canonical source, canonical decision, canonical status, canonical authority, and Canonical Review Backlog.
Canonical Source¶
Definition. The authoritative source artifact from which derivative expressions must be produced or against which they must be reconciled.
Canonical Authority¶
Definition. The formally governed authority of an artifact, definition, model, rule, or decision within its stated scope.
Canonical Review Backlog¶
Abbreviation. CRB.
Definition. The governed queue and decision-history system for proposed changes, unresolved questions, structural issues, and implementation matters that may affect authoritative VRBoK or ABoK content.
Application. The CRB is non-canonical and does not change Canon by itself.
Knowledge Object¶
Definition. A governed unit of knowledge, such as a concept, definition, model, Principle, Pattern, Practice, Playbook, performance measure, source record, Perspective, decision, or derivative asset.
Knowledge Library¶
Definition. A curated collection of reusable knowledge objects whose authority and lifecycle status are explicit.
Application. Inclusion does not by itself make an artifact canonical.
Applied Value Library¶
Definition. The Alescent-curated Library of reusable Offerings, Patterns, Practices, Products, Platforms, Playbooks, Proof, performance measures, Perspectives, and commercialization artifacts.
Relationship. Part of the ABoK. Individual artifacts retain explicit authority and lifecycle status.
Source Material¶
Definition. Preserved content representing what was submitted, observed, researched, discussed, or received.
Application. Source Material supports evidence and traceability but is not authoritative merely through inclusion.
Perspective¶
Definition. A non-canonical exploratory artifact used to develop, question, extend, compare, or challenge existing knowledge.
Application. A Perspective may inform a CRB or canonical decision but cannot override Canon by itself.
Derivative Asset¶
Definition. An artifact adapted from governed source material for a particular audience, channel, context, or use.
Application. A Derivative Asset inherits meaning from its sources and must not silently redefine canonical content.
Authority Status¶
Definition. The explicit classification identifying the governing authority of a knowledge object.
Preferred values. canonical, draft, proposed, perspective, reference, illustrative, derivative, deprecated, and superseded.
Lifecycle Status¶
Definition. The explicit classification identifying the development or workflow state of a knowledge object or governance item.
Application. Lifecycle status and authority status are separate dimensions. For example, a CRB may be implementing while the proposed artifact remains draft until accepted.
Usage Rules¶
- Use VRBoK and ABoK only after writing the full term on first use in executive or public-facing material.
- Preserve Canon and canonical for authority and governance.
- Use Framework for the organizing system, not the complete corpus.
- Use Library for curated reusable assets without presuming authority.
- Treat Perspective, Source Material, and Derivative Asset as non-canonical unless a governance decision explicitly changes the artifact class and authority status.
- Preserve the Alescent Legal Framework name because it identifies an operative legal and commercial system rather than merely a knowledge corpus.
